OLIVIER DEBRE DEAD
01 June 1999

French painter Olivier Debré, one of the leaders of the French school of abstract painting that blossomed in the 1950's, died in Paris on June 3rd 1999.

Debré often painted monumental paintings as well as theatre decors and produced some sculptures.

He had a studio near the Loire river and was much inspired by its surroundings. His works notably glorified nature while a retrospective held at the Jeu de Paume museum in Paris in 1995 confirmed his international stature.
