A RECORD WEEK FOR CHRISTIE'S
Christie's Frieze Week auctions in London concluded on Saturday 7 October with a record breaking total of £179,609,250, the highest figure ever achieved for a week of Post-War and Contemporary Art auctions in Europe.
The highest figure for an evening of PostWar and Contemporary Art in Europe was reached at Christie's on Friday 6 October, which achieved £134,076,500. Records were set across the week with 17 artist records, including some of the most celebrated and sought-after names in contemporary art including Antony Gormley, Grayson Perry, Howard Hodgkin, Robert Mapplethorpe, Michelangelo Pistoletto and Hurvin Anderson.
SUCCESS FOR THE COLLECTION OF PRINCE MARC DE BEAUVAU-CRAON IN PARIS The success of the sale of the spectacular collection of Prince Marc de Beauvau-Craon soldby Sotheby's in September 2017 in Paris bore witness to the history of this dynasty. It was a tribute to this great patron of the arts: husband to Laure, Président-directeur général of Sotheby's Paris from 1991 to 2003. Link
MITIGATED RESULTS FOR SOTHEBY'S FIRST SALE OF ITS FRIEZE WEEK AUCTION Sotheby's inaugurated its Frieze week auctions on October 5, 2017 in London with a £50.3 million sale (including buyers' premium) against an overall estimate of £60 million, its best for an October contemporary art sale in London. CHRISTIE'S SLIGHTLY SURPASSES SOTHEBY'S Finding the help of strong Asian biddings and thanks to a record for a Max Beckmann painting during its sale of Impressionist and Modern art held in London on June 28,2017, Christie's edged past Sotheby's with a total of 149.5 million GBP, just above its lower overall estimate. SOTHEBY'S SALE OF CONTEMPORARY ART FARES WELL IN LONDON Buoyed by 16 guaranteed bids, meaning effective private sales, Sotheby's totaled 62.4 million GBP, level with its high estimate, with 95% of lots sold mostly under estimates at its contemporary art sale held in London on June 28, 2017. This amount was up 20 percent from last June, but quite far from the 130 million totals of June 2012 and 2015. Link
KANDINSKY'S RECORD PRICE BROKEN TWICE Wassily Kandinsky's auction record was broken twice within minutes during Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern art sale held in London on June 21,2017 when his 1909 landscape with a green house sold for the equivalent of 26,4 million USD followed by his 1913 canvas titled “Bild mit Weissen Linien" (Painting With White Lines)”, which fetched 33 million pounds ($41.6 million with fees) Link
448 MILLION USD FOR CHRISTIE'S SALE OF POSTWAR AND CONTEMPORARY ART Christie's sale of postwar and contemporary art held at Rockefeller Center on May 17,2017, yielded a total of $448 million, not far from a 462 million expectation, simply because of a last-minute withdrawal of a major lot by Willem de Kooning estimated between 25 million and 35 million USD. TRIUMPH FOR DIEGO GIACOMETTI AT CHRISTIE'S
On 6 March 2017 in Paris, Christie's The Giacomettis of Hubert de Givenchy auction achieved a total of €32,748,500 with 100% of the lots sold above their pre-sale estimate.
The top price of the evening was Diego Giacometti's octogonal table aux caryatides et atlantes, executed circa 1980 which realised €4,162,500 (estimate: €600,000-800,000) establishing a new auction record for the artist.
Sotheby's Evening Sales of Impressionist & Modern Art and Surrealist Art held on March 1 2017 at Sotheby's London totalled £194,753,500, a sum which more than doubled the equivalent sale organized last year with a sell-through rate of 88.9%.
CHRISTIE'S SALE ART OF THE SURREAL FETCHES A TOTAL OF OVER 136 MILLION GBP The Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale and Art of the Surreal at Christie's in London on February 28 2017, achievied a combined total of £136,874,598 with lively bidding for Portrait de Lluis Alemany, a work dating from the very beginning of Picasso's career (£773,000 ) and continued with Berthe Morisot's "Femme en noir or Avant le théâtre", which achieved £2,045,000 against a pre-sale estimate of £600,000-800,000 and her "Femme et enfant au balcon" , which more than doubled its high estimate to realise £4,085,000.
