Probably because of a reference in the Bible to Abraham destroying statues of pagan gods, Jewish artists refrained from producing sculptures representing humans until at least the 19th Century. It was only after 1880, when many Jews benefited from the emancipation process in Central and Eastern Europe that they felt inclined to turn to this form of art.Many Jewish artists worked as sculptors during the 19th and 20th Century, some of them became quite famous like Chana Orlov, Jacques Lipchitz, Elie Nadelman or Jacob Epstein among others.

Nationality : German
Hildebrandt was partly Jewish. This artist created the Wittelsbach fountain in Munich.

Sculptor. Himmelhoch was detained in a Latvian ghetto in 1941.

Hoffman, Moshe Abraham
Birth - Death : 1938-1983
Nationality : Hungarian then Israeli
Moshe Hoffman worked as a painter and sculptor in Jerusalem. Born in Budapest, he was entrusted with his brother Chanoch to a Red Cross Institution during World War Two while their father was murdered by the Nazis in Auschwitz. Meanwhile, after escaping from a train heading towards Auschwitz, Hoffman's mother returned to Budapest and moved with her children from one hideout to another until Budapest was liberated.
Horn, Milton
Birth - Death : 1906-?
Nationality : Ukrainian then American
Born in the Ukraine, Horn came with his family to the U.S in 1913. He studied with Henry Hudson Kitson in Boston and pursued his studies in New York. He became a professional sculptor in 1927 and produced several relief pieces for Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as many statues and busts. Horn also made a walnut relief titled “Consecration of Isaia”¯.
Hovell, Joseph

Nationality : Ukrainian then American
Sculptor. Hovell studied at the Russian Imperial School and at the Cooper Union and the National Academy in New York.
Huttenbach, Alfred
Birth - Death : 1897-?
Nationality : German then British
Huttenbach studied in Munich under Pillartz and in Karlsruhe before working in Berlin until 1925. He settled in London in 1934, after a stay in Paris and produced portrait busts.
Huvos, Laszlo
Birth - Death : 1883-1973
Nationality : Hungarian
Sculptor.
