Around Jewish Art

The seemingly effortless process by which a suitable title is selected for an encyclopedia such as this became exponentially more complex and difficult as I explored the available options and heard the mounting arguments from all sides. Finding the right mix of words was crucial. After pondering the subject for several months in an effort to arrive at the best possible title, I finally opted for "Around Jewish Art."

List of artists of Jewish extraction who painted Jewish scenes or whose works came to reflect their attachment to their roots.


PART III
There were also some non-Jewish artists who painted Judaic and Jewish scenes or went to work in Palestine and those who exhibited in Jewish institutions and museums as well as others who have not been identified as being Jewish for sure.

Sculptors and medallists
Probably because of a reference in the Bible to Abraham destroying statues of pagan gods, Jewish artists refrained from producing sculptures representing humans until at least the 19th Century. It was only after 1880, when many Jews benefited from the emancipation process in Central and Eastern Europe that they felt inclined to turn to this form of art.
Many Jewish artists worked as sculptors during the 19th and 20th Century, some of them became quite famous like Chana Orlov, Jacques Lipchitz, Elie Nadelman or Jacob Epstein among others.

Jakubowicz, Michel
Birth - Death : 1940-
Nationality : French
Surrealist artist. Jakubowicz often represented distorted humanoids in his works.
Jakulov, Georges
Birth - Death : 1884-1928
Nationality : Russian
Jakulov went to Paris and Berlin before 1914. He worked in the French capital with Delaunay and also for the Habima Jewish Theatre in 1925.
Jamontt, Bronislaw
Birth - Death : 1886-1957
Nationality : Polish
Jamontt painted a street scene of the Jewish area of Wilno.
Jan or Johann
Birth - Death : Active during the 15th Century
Nationality : Dutch
Jan accompanied Frederick the Wise of Saxony to Jerusalem in 1493.

Nationality : Yugoslav
Painter.

Nationality : Polish
Jankowski painted a street scene in the Jewish area of Wilno.
Jankowski, Janusz Pawel
Birth - Death : 1902-?
Nationality : Polish
Janusz Jankowski painted some Judaic portraits in Poland.
Jankowski, Stanislaw
Birth - Death : 1876-1948
Nationality : Polish
Stanislaw Jankowski produced some paintings depicting Jewish scenes in Poland.
Jano, Jack
Birth - Death : 1950-
Nationality : Moroccan then Israeli
Jano immigrated in 1957 to Israel with his family and later frequented the Bezalel Academy. Working as a sculptor, he was awarded the Cite Internationale Prize in 1991 in Paris.
Jaray, Alexander (Sandor)
Birth - Death : 1870-1943
Nationality : Hungarian
Jaray exhibited his works in Berlin until 1909 and later settled in London. He notably produced many portrait busts of prominent actors.
Jaray, Tess
Birth - Death : 1937-
Nationality : British
Born in Vienna, Jaray studied at the Slade School in London from 1957 to 1960. Producing Minimalist works she took part in several exhibitions, notably in Rome, Milan, Amsterdam, Bern, London, Mexico, Tokyo or Liverpool.
Jarema, Maria
Birth - Death : 1908-1958
Nationality : Polish
Jarema painted some Judaic portraits in Poland.
Jarocinski, Marian
Birth - Death : 1819-1901
Nationality : Polish
Engraver. Jarocinski produced works depicting Jewish scenes in Poland.
Jarzymski, Antoni Grabarz
Birth - Death : 1904-1965
Nationality : Polish
Painter, draughtsman and interior designer. Jarzymski studied painting in Warsaw between 1922 and 1928 and produced portraits, genre scenes, murals, caricatures and interior designs. After the war he worked under the influence of post-Impressionism and Cubism.
Javor, Pal
Birth - Death : 1880-1923
Nationality : Hungarian
Javor studied at the Academy in Budapest and the Academie Julian in Paris. He then produced mural compositions, figures and portraits.
Jeanclos (Jankelowitch) or Jeanclos-Mosse, Georges
Birth - Death : 1933-
Nationality : French
Jeanclos was raised in the Jewish area of Saint Paul in Paris. He was awarded the Rome Prize for sculpture in 1959 and then worked with Balthus. Jeanclos took part in many exhibitions in France and in Europe and produced terracotta sculptures mainly. One of his works is notably on display at the Jewish Museum in New York. Jeanclos also produced some Judaic-related works.
Jeffray, Paul
Birth - Death : 1898-1957
Nationality : British
Born in Scotland to Polish parents, Jeffray studied painting at 14 and then fought during World War One as a soldier in Jabotinsky's army. He came to Paris in 1921with the idea of settling afterwards in Canada to teach painting but changed his mind and stayed in the French capital. Jeffray sought refuge in England during World War Two and returned to Paris in 1945.
Jelgerhuis, Johannes
Birth - Death : 1770-1836
Nationality : Dutch
Johannes Jelgerhuis painted some works depicting Jewish buildings in Haarleem.
