Around Jewish Art

The seemingly effortless process by which a suitable title is selected for an encyclopedia such as this became exponentially more complex and difficult as I explored the available options and heard the mounting arguments from all sides. Finding the right mix of words was crucial. After pondering the subject for several months in an effort to arrive at the best possible title, I finally opted for "Around Jewish Art."

List of artists of Jewish extraction who painted Jewish scenes or whose works came to reflect their attachment to their roots.


PART III
There were also some non-Jewish artists who painted Judaic and Jewish scenes or went to work in Palestine and those who exhibited in Jewish institutions and museums as well as others who have not been identified as being Jewish for sure.

Sculptors and medallists
Probably because of a reference in the Bible to Abraham destroying statues of pagan gods, Jewish artists refrained from producing sculptures representing humans until at least the 19th Century. It was only after 1880, when many Jews benefited from the emancipation process in Central and Eastern Europe that they felt inclined to turn to this form of art.
Many Jewish artists worked as sculptors during the 19th and 20th Century, some of them became quite famous like Chana Orlov, Jacques Lipchitz, Elie Nadelman or Jacob Epstein among others.

Nationality : Hungarian
He worked for a while as an illustrator in London and returned to Budapest, wHere He continued to illustrate books.
Farago, Geza
Birth - Death : 1877-1928
Nationality : Hungarian
Geza Farago first produced textile designs before going to Paris, where he studied painting and drawing, at the Academie Colarossi. He was awarded the Harkanyi Prize in Budapest in 1905 and had a one-man show there at the Salon Nemzeti in 1910. Geza Farago also worked as a costume designer for many theatres in Vienna and in Budapest and created posters in a style recalling that of Alfons Mucha.
Farago, Jozsef
Birth - Death : 1866-1906
Nationality : Hungarian
Joszef Farago studied under Hollosy in Munich before going to Paris for a while. He then worked as a cartoonist in New York and returned to Hungary, where he worked for several periodicals. Jozsef Farago also painted nudes and genre scenes.

Farba, Isaac
Birth - Death : 1914-
Nationality : Polish then Israeli
Farba studied painting in Poland and at the Grande Chaumiere in Paris before World War Two. He settled in the French capital in 1964 and exhibited symbolic works painted in an Expressionist style in Rome, New York and Tel Aviv.

Birth - Death : 1624-1706
Nationality : Italian
Farelli painted some biblical scenes during his career.
Farinati, Paolo
Birth - Death : 1524-1606
Nationality : Italian
Farinati painted some biblical scenes during his career.
Farkas-Fischof, Eva
Birth - Death : 20th Century
Nationality : Hungarian then Israeli
Farkas-Fischof graduated from the Bat-Yam Institute in painting and sculpting. She took part in several exhibitions in Israel and abroad.
Farkashazi, Miklos
Birth - Death : 1895-1964
Nationality : Hungarian
Graphic artist.
Fas, Berl
Birth - Death : 20th Century
Nationality : Polish
. Painter. This artist was among the very last decorators of Polish synagogues before the Second World War. He notably painted the walls of the synagogues in Rymanow, Galicia, around 1930.
Fast, Omar
Birth - Death : 1972-
Nationality : Israeli
Fast has been diverting the stereotyped language of the CNN news channel to create his works.
Fay d'Herbe, Lukas
Birth - Death : 1617-1697
Nationality : Dutch
Sculptor. Fay d'Herbe notably produced a relief piece titled “The Judgment of Solomon”.
Fazzini, Pericle
Birth - Death : 1913-1987
Nationality : Italian
Fazzini studied drawing in Rome, where he started a career as a sculptor in 1929. He took part in many exhibitions in Italy and abroad and won a competition in 1958 for the Monument dedicated to the people who perished in Auschwitz.
Feder, Eudice
Birth - Death : 1918-
Nationality : Polish then American
Eudice Feder studied at the Cleveland School of Art and in Chicago with Moholy-Nagy and worked as a painter. Specialising also in computer graphics, she explored themes of the Exodus and Jewish symbols. She exhibited her works in Europe, the Far East and the U.S.
Fedkowicz, Jerzy
Birth - Death : 1891-1959
Nationality : Polish
Fedkowicz painted some Judaic portraits during his career.
Fefer, Ch.
Birth - Death : 19th-20th Century
Nationality : Lithuanian?
Nothing is known about this artist who produced a wonderful painting titled “Holiday” exhaling a great sense of humour and respect for Judaic life.
Feferberg, Nili
Birth - Death : 20th-21st Century
Nationality : Israeli
Painter.
Feferman, Volf
Birth - Death : Active from the last decade of the 20th Century
Nationality : Ukrainian
Feferman settled in the U.S in 1993 and took up painting as a hobby in a San Francisco Jewish home for the aged.
Fehl, Fred
Birth - Death : 1906-1995
Nationality : American
Photographer.
Feibusch, Hans
Birth - Death : 1898-?
Nationality : German
Painter. During the 1930s, the Nazis denounced Feibusch's works as being an expression of the Jewish soul.
