Chwat studied painting at the Academy in Saint Petersburg and visited Paris in 1906. After a stay in Geneva, where he married a medical student, he returned to Saint Petersburg and stayed there until 1918. He then fled from Russia and settled in Paris, where he studied at the School of Beaux-Arts. During World War Two he sought refuge in Casablanca, Morocco, and returned to Paris in 1945. Chwat exhibited his Expressionist works at the Salons des Independants and of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts and was awarded the Othon Friesz Prize in 1952. Chwat visited Israel in 1957.
