Around Jewish Art

The seemingly effortless process by which a suitable title is selected for an encyclopedia such as this became exponentially more complex and difficult as I explored the available options and heard the mounting arguments from all sides. Finding the right mix of words was crucial. After pondering the subject for several months in an effort to arrive at the best possible title, I finally opted for "Around Jewish Art."

Artists of Jewish Extraction Who Did Not Paint Judaic Scenes

List of artists of Jewish extraction who painted Jewish scenes or whose works came to reflect their attachment to their roots.

There were also some non-Jewish artists who painted Judaic and Jewish scenes or went to work in Palestine and those who exhibited in Jewish institutions and museums as well as others who have not been identified as being Jewish for sure.

Sculptors and medallists
Probably because of a reference in the Bible to Abraham destroying statues of pagan gods, Jewish artists refrained from producing sculptures representing humans until at least the 19th Century. It was only after 1880, when many Jews benefited from the emancipation process in Central and Eastern Europe that they felt inclined to turn to this form of art.
Many Jewish artists worked as sculptors during the 19th and 20th Century, some of them became quite famous like Chana Orlov, Jacques Lipchitz, Elie Nadelman or Jacob Epstein among others.

Birth - Death : 1896-?
Nationality : Russian
Chatzman was a painter of landscapes, flowers and still lifes. He notably depicted a shtetl in one of his paintings. Chatzman, who presumably disappeared during the Second World War, exhibited his works in Paris between 1926 and 1939.
*?Ciechanowski, Izaak
Birth - Death : 1901-1944?
Nationality : Polish
Ciechanowski studied painting in Warsaw and exhibited his works in 1935 with the Jewish artists belonging to the ZTKSP group in Poland. The Nazis presumably murdered him between 1941 and 1944.
*?Hendel, Natan
Birth - Death : Active during the first half of the 20th Century
Nationality : Polish
Hendel started to exhibit his works in 1926. He also took part in the exhibitions of the ZTKSP group in 1932 and 1933 showing still lifes and portraits. He presumably died during World War Two.
*?Jazwiecki, Franciszek
Birth - Death : 1900-1945 or 1946
Nationality : Polish
Jazwiecki studied art in Cracow and worked there as a painter until he was arrested in 1940. Deported to Auschwitz in December 1942 and later to Gross Rosen, Sachsenhausen, Buchenwald and Halberstadt, he drew many portraits of fellow inmates in these camps. He died either in the spring of 1945 or in October 1946.

Birth - Death : Active during the 1930s
Nationality : Polish
Painter. This artist, who presumably disappeared during the Second World War, belonged to the “Jung Idysz” group of artists in Poland.
*?Levy-Bloch Rachel
Birth - Death : 1894-?
Nationality : French
Painter. She notably depicted Popular Jewish scenes in Paris. She presumably died during the Second World War.
Birth - Death : ?-1943?
Nationality : Polish
Lewinson produced drawings of the Warsaw ghetto in 1942. He presumably died during World War Two.
*?Nussbaum, Jakob
Birth - Death : 1873-?
Nationality : German
Nussbaum worked as an Impressionist painter in Frankfurt. He also traveled to Hungary and Tunisia.
*?Pinkert, Herman
Birth - Death : 1890?-?
Nationality : Polish
Pinkert studied painting between 1906 and 1907 and exhibited his works with the Jewish artists from the Polish ZTKSP group between 1926 and 1935. He notably painted portraits of Jewish people in Poland as well as still lifes and landscapes. Pinkert presumably died during World War Two.
*?Rozental, Roman
Birth - Death : 1897- 1943 or after1945
Nationality : Polish
Roman Rozental studied painting in Lodz, Vienna and Paris before working as a landscape painter. He belonged to the “Start” group and became secretary of the Association of Jewish artists in Poland during the 1930s. He visited France between 1929 and 1933 and then exhibited his works in 1933 and 1935 with the Jewish artists of the ZTKSP group. Roman Rozental reportedly perished in Treblinka, but according to other sources he was said to have died in Israel after 1945.

Nationality : Hungarian
This painter disappeared during World War Two.
*?Trefler, Janusz
Birth - Death : 1896-1944
Nationality : Polish
Trefler exhibited his works in 1922 in Warsaw at the Exhibition of Jewish Artists. He visited Palestine in 1934 and became the curator of the Museum of the Jewish congregation. This painter of portraits, landscapes and still lifes who also worked as a printmaker was presumably murdered by the Nazis during World War Two.

Nationality : Polish
*?Wodnicki, Szmuel
Birth - Death : Active during the first half of the 20th Century
Nationality : Polish
Wodnicki worked as a cobbler in the Kazimierz Dolny shtetl. This self-taught artist, who was fascinated by Van Gogh, exhibited watercolors with Jewish painters of the ZTKSP group.
*?Zilzer, Gyula
Birth - Death : 1898- ?
Nationality : Hungarian
Gyula Zilzer worked as a printmaker after studying in Budapest, in Munich and in Paris.
*Acker, Julia
Birth - Death : 1898-1942
Nationality : Polish
Expressionist painter. Julia Acker notably produced a painting titled “The Talmudists”. She committed suicide when the Nazis launched an attack on Jews in a Polish town during World War Two.
*Acs, Lipot
Birth - Death : 1868-1945
Nationality : Hungarian
Painter. Acs disappeared at the end of the Second World War.
*Adler, Jean
Birth - Death : 1899-1942
Nationality : French
Jean Adler was Jules Adler's nephew. He spent his youth in Paris and frequented the School of Beaux-Arts in 1919. Jean Adler went on to paint portraits, nudes, and landscapes, which he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais between 1922 and 1933. He had his first solo exhibition in 1928 and taught drawing at a school in Villejuif. Jean Adler and his brother were arrested by Gestapo agents on December 12, 1941, and detained in Compiegne before their transfer to Drancy. They were deported on March 27, 1942, to Auschwitz and subsequently killed there.

Birth - Death : 1907-1944
Nationality : Rumanian
Painter. He disappeared during World War II.
*Altschuler, Bernard
Birth - Death : 1895-1944
Nationality : French
Altschuler took an interest in painting at a young age and studied at the Academie Frochot in Paris. During World War II, he sought refuge in Nice but was arrested and deported on March 27, 1944, to Auschwitz, where he was murdered.
