Around Jewish Art

The seemingly effortless process by which a suitable title is selected for an encyclopedia such as this became exponentially more complex and difficult as I explored the available options and heard the mounting arguments from all sides. Finding the right mix of words was crucial. After pondering the subject for several months in an effort to arrive at the best possible title, I finally opted for "Around Jewish Art."

List of artists of Jewish extraction who painted Jewish scenes or whose works came to reflect their attachment to their roots.


PART III
There were also some non-Jewish artists who painted Judaic and Jewish scenes or went to work in Palestine and those who exhibited in Jewish institutions and museums as well as others who have not been identified as being Jewish for sure.

Sculptors and medallists
Probably because of a reference in the Bible to Abraham destroying statues of pagan gods, Jewish artists refrained from producing sculptures representing humans until at least the 19th Century. It was only after 1880, when many Jews benefited from the emancipation process in Central and Eastern Europe that they felt inclined to turn to this form of art.
Many Jewish artists worked as sculptors during the 19th and 20th Century, some of them became quite famous like Chana Orlov, Jacques Lipchitz, Elie Nadelman or Jacob Epstein among others.

Nationality : Rumanian
Painter. Wallfish produced landscapes mainly.
Wamps, Bernard Joseph
Birth - Death : 1689-1750?
Nationality : French
Wamps painted some biblical scenes during his career.
Wandereisen, Hans
Birth - Death : Active during the early 16th Century
Nationality : German
Wandereisen produced an engraving showing a Jew making a request.
Wanetik, Malka
Birth - Death : 20th Century
Nationality : Ukrainian then Israeli
Malka Wanetik came to Palestine at a young age and studied painting at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv between 1953 and 1956.
Wang, Batia
Birth - Death : 20th-21st Century
Nationality : Israeli
Painter.
Warahaftig, Lila
Birth - Death : 1934-
Nationality : American
Sculptor. Inspired by the Torah, Warahaftig produced abstract and non-abstract works.
Ward, Alexander
Birth - Death : Active during the last third of the 20th Century
Nationality : British
Ward has been working as a painter and designer in Jerusalem.
Warhol, Andy
Birth - Death : 1928-1987
Nationality : American
Warhol became a leading figure of the Pop Art movement. He notably exhibited his works in 1980 at the Jewish Museum in New York.
Warin, Francis
Birth - Death : 20th Century
Nationality : French
Warin exhibited his works, drawings, pastels and paintings, in Paris in December 1999. Warin is the nephew of Alphonse Kann, whose famous collection of paintings and works of art was plundered by the Nazis during the Second World War.
Warshawsky, Abel George
Birth - Death : 1883-1962
Nationality : American
Warshawsky exhibited his works, notably portraits and landscapes, in New York and in Paris.
Warshawsky, Alexander
Birth - Death : 1887-?
Nationality : American
Painter of figures and still lifes. Warshawsky worked in Paris from 1914.
Warzager, Ber
Birth - Death : ?-1988?
Nationality : German
Warzager painted some works depicting shtetl scenes during his career.
Wasserman (Segal), Ruth
Birth - Death : 20th Century
Nationality : German then American
Painter. Born in Germany during the reign of Hitler, Wasserman was sent by her parents to England in 1938 in order to save her life. She immigrated to the U.S after the war and then studied at the Art Institute in Chicago and at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. She notably exhibited watercolors and oil works at the Spertus Museum of Judaism.
Wasserman Deborah
Birth - Death : 1965-
Nationality : Brazilian then Israeli
Born in Sao Paulo she immigrated in 1967 with her parents to Israel, where she later enrolled at the Shenkar College of Design. She then studied at the Tel Aviv School of the Arts and concentrated on painting producing abstract works. She perfected her studies at the California Institute of the Arts and turned herself to photography, video art and installation. She produced multi-media installations involving audio, video texts and objects. She exhibited at the Whitney Open Studios and called her showing “Captured”. She also showed her works in 1997 at the Bronx Museum and began to examine the language of painting and its boundaries through a new perspective in creating a synthesis of narrative elements in her works.

Painter and sculptor. She produced abstract works.
Waterford, Louisa de
Birth - Death : 1818-1891
Nationality : British
Painter. Waterford produced some biblical scenes during his career.
Watts Hanna
Birth - Death : 20th-21st Century
Nationality : Israeli
Painter.
Watts, George Frederick
Birth - Death : 1817-1904
Nationality : British
Watts notably painted Claude Joseph Goldsmid-Montefiore's portrait. He also produced some biblical scenes during his career.
Waydelich, Raymond
Birth - Death : 1938-
Nationality : French
Waydelich studied art in Strasbourg and in Paris and worked as a sculptor and creator of installations. In 1973, he created “Lydia Jacob Story” made with collages under glass with objects and fragments of the diary of Lydia Jacob, a Jewish dressmaker of the 19th Century, he had found in a flea market.
Webb, William
Birth - Death : Active from 1870 until 1880
Nationality : British
Webb went in 1862 to Palestine and painted street scenes in Jerusalem.
