Around Jewish Art

The seemingly effortless process by which a suitable title is selected for an encyclopedia such as this became exponentially more complex and difficult as I explored the available options and heard the mounting arguments from all sides. Finding the right mix of words was crucial. After pondering the subject for several months in an effort to arrive at the best possible title, I finally opted for "Around Jewish Art."

List of artists of Jewish extraction who painted Jewish scenes or whose works came to reflect their attachment to their roots.


PART III
There were also some non-Jewish artists who painted Judaic and Jewish scenes or went to work in Palestine and those who exhibited in Jewish institutions and museums as well as others who have not been identified as being Jewish for sure.

PART IV
Sculptors and medallists
Probably because of a reference in the Bible to Abraham destroying statues of pagan gods, Jewish artists refrained from producing sculptures representing humans until at least the 19th Century. It was only after 1880, when many Jews benefited from the emancipation process in Central and Eastern Europe that they felt inclined to turn to this form of art.
Many Jewish artists worked as sculptors during the 19th and 20th Century, some of them became quite famous like Chana Orlov, Jacques Lipchitz, Elie Nadelman or Jacob Epstein among others.

Nahon, Serge

Nationality : French
Serge Nahon studied at the School of Beaux-Arts in Paris and later produced abstract and figurative paintings.
Nahon, Suzy Claire
Birth - Death : Active during the second half of the 20th Century
Nationality : French
Suzy Nahon took part in several group exhibitions in France from 1960 and had solo shows in Oran in 1960 and in Paris in 1963.

Naiditch, Vladimir
Birth - Death : 1903-1980
Nationality : Russian
Naiditch studied art in Moscow and exhibited his works for the first time at 14. He settled in Paris around 1920 and studied painting at the Academy of La Grande Chaumiere between 1927 and 1929 before exhibiting his works several times in the French capital. Naiditch, who ran a French whisky distillery with his brother, befriended many artists such as Andre Lhote, Michel Larionov, Kostia Terechkovitch, Jean Pougny, Lazare Volovick or Ossip Lubitch. He went to Cuba in 1930 and then lived in the U.S until 1946. Back in Paris, he found that his studio had been completely devastated by the Germans during the war. Closely linked to the School of Paris, he painted numerous colourful nudes, still-lifes and landscapes.

Naiveu painted some biblical scenes during his career.
Naiwinx, Hermann
Birth - Death : 1624?-1651 or 1654
Nationality : Flemish
Naiwinx painted some biblical scenes during his career.
Nakache, Armand
Birth - Death : 1894-1976
Nationality : French
Born in Algeria, Nakache settled in Paris. He interrupted his artistic studies in 1914 and fought with the French Army at the outbreak of World War One during which he was seriously wounded several times in combat. After the war, Nakache exhibited his works in many Salons in France and abroad. He was one of the few French artists who worked as an Expressionist painter. One of his paintings is on permanent display at the Haifa Museum.
Nallard, Louis Armand
Birth - Death : 1918-
Nationality : French
Nallard studied painting in Algiers and settled in Paris in 1947. Working as a painter of landscapes and abstract compositions, he exhibited his works several times in France and abroad, notably in Tel Aviv, Haifa and Jerusalem in 1960.
Nansen, Odd
Birth - Death : 20th Century
Nationality : Norwegian
Odd Nansen was the son of the famous explorer Fridtjof Nansen. He helped the rescue work for Norway's 1,700 Jews through a committee called the “Nansen Aid Group” and was arrested by the Nazis in January 1942. Deported to Sachsenhausen, he produced several drawings in that Nazi camp.

Naoum-Aronson, Mrs
Birth - Death : Active at the turn of the 20th Century
Nationality : Russian
Naoum-Aronson exhibited sculpture works in Paris and was awarded a silver medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition there.
Nappelbaum, Moisei Solomonovich
Birth - Death : 1869-1958
Nationality : Byelorussian
Nappelbaum made his way from poverty in Minsk to professional success as a photographer in St. Petersburg. Around 1884, he entered the Boretti Photograph Studio in Minsk and moved secretly in 1889 to Moscow, where Jews needed a residential permit. Nappelbaum then stayed in the U.S during five years before setting up a portrait studio in 1895 in St. Petersburg. In 1918, he was summoned by Lenin to take his portrait and received many commissions to photograph other members of the new Soviet government. Nappelbaum then set up the State Photographic Studio and during the 1920s and 1930s. He photographed all the leading Soviet personalities, writers, artists and scholars.

Birth - Death : 20th Century
Nationality : Russian
Born in Vitebsk, Natarevitch studied painting with Marc Chagall there.
Nathan, Uri
Birth - Death : 20th Century
Nationality : Israeli
Nathan painted works depicting Jewish scenes during his career.
Nathansen, Enoch
Birth - Death : ?-1807
Nationality : German
Printmaker.
Nathansen, Levy Enoch
Birth - Death : 1790-1845
Nationality : German
Levy Nathansen worked as a printmaker in Hamburg.
Nathansen, Wolff Levy
Birth - Death : 1825-1899
Nationality : German
Wolff Nathansen worked occasionally as a printmaker in Hamburg.
Natif, Meir
Birth - Death : 1955-
Nationality : Israeli
He studied painting at the Bat Yam Institute between 1970 and 1972 and at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv between 1977 and 1980 before living at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris in 1987.
