because of a reference in the Bible to Abraham destroying statues of
pagan gods, Jewish artists refrained from producing sculptures
representing humans until at least the 19th Century. It was only after
1880, when many Jews benefited from the emancipation process in Central
and Eastern Europe that they felt inclined to turn to this form of art.Many
Jewish artists worked as sculptors during the 19th and 20th Century,
some of them became quite famous like Chana Orlov, Jacques Lipchitz,
Elie Nadelman or Jacob Epstein among others.

Ukeles has been working as a multimedia artist as well as a creator of installations. Considering herself as a Jewish artist because she says her work starts from a place of Jewish spirit, she presented a ballet of garbage trucks and street sweepers at the European International Art Festival and exhibited in 1986 a Mikveh ritual bath

Ulman has been producing sculptures in Israel as well as a monumental installation titled “Library” on the Bebelplatz in Berlin, where the Nazis burned 20,000 works on May 10th 1933. This artist has had a close relationship with books made of iron and sand.
