Sculptors and medallists
Probably because of a reference in the Bible to Abraham destroying statues of pagan gods, Jewish artists refrained from producing sculptures representing humans until at least the 19th Century. It was only after 1880, when many Jews benefited from the emancipation process in Central and Eastern Europe that they felt inclined to turn to this form of art.Many Jewish artists worked as sculptors during the 19th and 20th Century, some of them became quite famous like Chana Orlov, Jacques Lipchitz, Elie Nadelman or Jacob Epstein among others.

Sachar, Edith

Nationality : American
Edith Sachar was Mark Rothko's first wife. Sachar produced some sculptures and worked as a jewel designer.
Sadock, Franck

Nationality : French
Sculptor. Sadock notably offered a plaster piece for an auction sale held on November 28th 2002 in Paris, in favour of the Appel Unifie Juif de France organisation.

Samuel, Charles
Birth - Death : 1862-1939
Nationality : Belgian
Charles Samuel studied in Brussels with Charles Wiener, L.E Simonis, J.J Jaquet and C. van der Stappen and first worked as a goldsmith before becoming a renowned sculptor in Belgium. Married to the Canadian artist Juliette Blum, he exhibited his works at the Salon des Artistes Francais and was awarded a silver medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition in Paris as well as a gold medal in 1900 again in the French capital. Charles Samuel produced bronze, stone, marble and wood sculptures during his career.

Schafler, Erwin

Nationality : Austrian then Israeli
Schafler sought refuge in Rumania in 1937 and then in 1940 in the Ukraine before fighting with the Soviet Army in 1943. He settled in Transylvania in 1946 and immigrated in 1958 to Israel, where he worked as a sculptor.
Schatz (Selman), Boris Baruch called Schatz
Birth - Death : 1867-1932
Nationality : Lithuanian
Boris Schatz studied in Wilno and in Warsaw before pursuing his studies in Paris between 1890 and 1896 with Antokolski. He then went to Sofia, where he taught sculpture until 1906 before settling in Palestine. Schatz, who played an active role for the promotion of sculpture in Bulgaria, also founded in 1906 the Bezalel School, the first Fine Art Academy in Palestine, and produced many Judaic-related sculptures. Boris Schatz died in 1932 in the U.S.

Schoffer studied painting in Budapest in 1930 and then went in 1936 to Paris, where he frequented the School of Beaux-Arts until 1939. After he remained in hiding in the Auvergne region during the German occupation of France Schoffer showed the works he produced during this period in 1945 and 1946 in an exhibition organised by the grouping of French Jewish artists active in France GAJEF
