Sculptors and medallists
Probably because of a reference in the Bible to Abraham destroying statues of pagan gods, Jewish artists refrained from producing sculptures representing humans until at least the 19th Century. It was only after 1880, when many Jews benefited from the emancipation process in Central and Eastern Europe that they felt inclined to turn to this form of art.Many Jewish artists worked as sculptors during the 19th and 20th Century, some of them became quite famous like Chana Orlov, Jacques Lipchitz, Elie Nadelman or Jacob Epstein among others.

Mahler, Anna
Birth - Death : 1904-1968
Nationality : German
Anna Mahler was the daughter of Gustav, the famous musician, and Alma Mahler. She first studied painting under Giorgio de Chirico and then sculpture with Yoruba in Vienna, where she lived until the Anschluss in 1938. She then went to Paris, but the outbreak of the Second World War forced her to flee to London. Mahler then settled in California and produced bronze and stone works during her career.
Majaro-Mintz, Lea
Birth - Death : Active from the last quarter of the 20th Century
Nationality : Israeli
Majaro-Mintz's forbears came to the Holy Land in 1740. She studied at the Bezalel Academy and then produced many wall relief works notably.
Malkin, David
Birth - Death : 1910-?
Nationality : Ukrainian
Malkin was the grandson of a calligrapher specialising in the production of Hebrew prayer books. He went to Palestine in 1934 and fought with the British Army in Italy during World War Two. After settling in Florence, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, he exhibited his works, notably sculptures and abstract paintings, in Jerusalem, Florence, Rome and Paris. He first produced figurative sculptures and then was inspired by forms suggesting Hebrew letters. Working in France from 1955, Malkin also produced works depicting Hassidim.

Sculptor.
Mandell, Jonathan
Birth - Death : 20th- 21st Century
Nationality : American
Mandell produced mosaic works at Temple Israel, Swanscott, Mass., the Adath Israel Synagogue and other Jewish institutions.
Mane Katz, Emanuel Katz called Mane Katz
Birth - Death : 1894-1962
Nationality : Ukrainian then French
Working chiefly as a painter, Mane Katz also produced several sculptures relating to the Jewish folklore.
Manes, Boris
Birth - Death : 1932-
Nationality : Rumanian then Israeli
Manes studied art in Bucharest before settling in Israel in 1969. He produced paintings, sculptures and ceramic works.
Marcus, Kaete Ephraim
Birth - Death : 1892-1970
Nationality : German
Marcus studied under Lovis Corinth and Max Beckmann. In 1925 she studied with Lhote in Paris and made her first trip to Palestine, where she settled in 1934 after leaving Germany for good. She then started to produce sculptures there.

Nationality : Hungarian
Margo studied under Matrai, Stobl and Puech before working as a sculptor.
Margoulies, Berta
Birth - Death : 1907-?
Nationality : Polish then American
Sculptor. Berta Margoulies settled in the U.S in 1921 and studied at the Art Students League in New York until 1929. Margoulies then pursued her studies in Paris at the Academie Colarossi and the Academie Julian until 1931.
Maroti, Geza

Nationality : Hungarian
Maroti studied in Budapest and in Vienna and then worked as a sculptor and painter.
Marton, Ervin

Sculptor.
Mayer, Maurice
Birth - Death : Active during the 2nd half of the 19th Century
Nationality : French
Silversmith. Mayer produced Judaic artifacts, notably Torah cases and finials, one being now exhibited in the Jewish Museum in New York.
Mayer, Simon Jacob called Simon de Paris
Birth - Death : 1746-1821
Nationality : Flemish
Simon de Paris produced cameo profiles in Brussels and in Paris.

Medinger produced silver Judaica pieces in Israel.
Medwin, Steve

Nationality : American
Medwin has been creating Jewish ritual objects.
Mehutan, Hava
Birth - Death : 1925-
Nationality : American then Israeli
Mehutan studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Pennsylvania before immigrating in 1954 to Israel, where she mainly produced wood sculptures. She worked in Beersheva for many years and then moved to Jerusalem.
Meiri, Dalia
Birth - Death : 1951-
Nationality : Israeli
Sculptor. Meiri studied at the Bezalel School in Jerusalem between 1972 and 1976.
Meisler, Frank
Birth - Death : Active from the second half of the 20th Century
Nationality : Polish then Israeli
Born in Danzig and educated in England, Meisler settled in 1960 in Israel, where he exhibited his sculptures as well as in Kiev, Madrid, Mannheim and Florida. Meisler notably produced a Holocaust memorial in Miami.
Mekusa, Angela
Birth - Death : 20th Century
Nationality : French
Mekusa produced sculptures in France.
