Sculptors and medallists
Probably because of a reference in the Bible to Abraham destroying statues of pagan gods, Jewish artists refrained from producing sculptures representing humans until at least the 19th Century. It was only after 1880, when many Jews benefited from the emancipation process in Central and Eastern Europe that they felt inclined to turn to this form of art.Many Jewish artists worked as sculptors during the 19th and 20th Century, some of them became quite famous like Chana Orlov, Jacques Lipchitz, Elie Nadelman or Jacob Epstein among others.

Ebstein, Joseph
Birth - Death : 1881-?
Nationality : French
Ebstein studied sculpture in Paris and exhibited his works at the Salon des Artistes Francais from 1905. He was awarded the French Legion of Honour in 1930.
Efrat, Beni
Birth - Death : 1936-
Nationality : Lebanese then Israeli
Efrat settled in Palestine in 1947 and studied art under Streichman at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv. He went in 1964 to work in Europe and lived in London between 1966 and 1976. Efrat has been creating sculptures with geometric forms.
Ehrlich, Georg
Birth - Death : 1897-1966
Nationality : Austrian then British
Ehrlich studied art and architecture in Vienna before going in 1921 to Berlin, where he later worked as a sculptor and befriended Kokoschka and E. Barlach. He exhibited his works in Paris in 1926 and took part in the Venice Biennial in 1934 and 1936. Ehrlich sought refuge in London in 1939 and took par in an exhibition in New York in 1947. One of his works is on display at the Museum of Tel Aviv.
Eisenberg, Abraham
Birth - Death : 1879-1956
Nationality : Polish
Eisenberg worked as a sculptor in Poland. After studying in Warsaw and in Paris he exhibited his works in 1913 with Minkowski and S. Centnerszwer. Eisenberg, who produced many sculptures representing Jewish people, later settled in the U.S.
Elion (Cohen), Jacques

Nationality : Dutch
Jacques Elion studied at the Academy in Amsterdam and then worked as a medallist and engraver.

Nationality : Dutch
Salomon Cohen Elion worked as a medallist. Possible confusion with Elion Cohen Samuel.
Elion, Cohen Samuel
Birth - Death : 1815-1880
Nationality : Dutch
This artist was Jacques Elion's father. Samuel Cohen Elion worked as a medallist and also produced cameo portraits during his career.
Elkan, Benno
Birth - Death : 1877-1960
Nationality : German
Benno Elkan ran away from a clothing store in Antwerp where he was employed in order to study painting at the Academy in Munich. He also studied in Karlsruhe and then went to Paris to work with Albert Bartholome. He notably exhibited in 1906 a bronze bust of Julius Pascin and traveled to Italy before returning to Germany in 1911. He worked as a sculptor in Alsbach, where he created many monuments and notably produced many Jewish-related subjects. Elkan then settled in Frankfurt and later sought refuge in England in 1934.
Engel, Joseph
Birth - Death : 1815-1901
Nationality : Hungarian
Engel studied at the Academy in Vienna and in London. He lived in Rome between 1847 and 1866 and from 1866 in Budapest, where he produced monuments. Joseph Engel notably exhibited his works at the Royal Academy in London in 1888 and at the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1889.
Epstein, Jacob
Birth - Death : 1880-1959
Nationality : British
Born in New York to Jewish orthodox Russian-Polish immigrants, Epstein attended the Art Students League and then went to Paris in 1902. He settled in London in 1905 and became a British subject. He was at the chore of a scandal in 1907 when he created for the British medical Association 18 statues, which were severely criticised at the time. After becoming a member of the Vorticist movement, Epstein went on to set up the London Group. His production was much influenced by Primitive art works.

Born in Mutzig, Alsace, Amelie Ernst produced sculptures and paintings.
Eshel (Gershuni), Bianka
Birth - Death : 1932-
Nationality : Bulgarian then Israeli
Bianka Eshel settled in Palestine in 1939 and studied sculpture at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv under Sternschuss and Feigin as well as painting with Mokady, Streichman and Stematsky. Bianka Eshel has been creating multi media installations since 1980.
Etrog, Sorel
Birth - Death : 1933-
Nationality : Rumanian then Canadian
Etrog has been working as a sculptor mainly. Born in Rumania, where he studied painting in 1949, he immigrated to Israel the following year and studied at the Institute of Painting and Sculpture in Tel Aviv between 1953 and 1955. He then joined a cooperative group of artists at Ein Hod founded by Marcel Janco and had his first one-man exhibition at ZOA, Tel Aviv, in 1958. He settled in Toronto in 1961 and represented Canada at the 1966 Venice Biennale. Sorel first sculptures were mainly plywood painted constructions and small terracotta pieces but since 1962 he has modelled in plaster for bronze casting and has also carved in marble.

Ettlinger, Salomon
Birth - Death : 20th Century
Nationality : French
Sculptor. Salomon Ettlinger exhibited his works at the Salon des Artistes Francais in Paris during the 1930s.
Ezechiel, Moses Jakob
Birth - Death : 1844-1917
Nationality : American
Ezechiel studied at the Academy in Berlin between 1869 and 1873 and then lived in Rome, where he worked as a sculptor. He exhibited his works in several European capitals after 1869.
