Mafai, who married the Jewish artist Antonietta Raphael in Rome, studied painting in that city and visited Paris, where he discovered the works of Modigliani, Chagall, Soutine, Kisling and Pascin. Inspired by the Surrealist works of Scipione, he became one of the main representatives of what was called the “Roman” School founded in 1928 in reaction against the Novecento movement. He painted somewhat Surrealist works until 1940 and then adopted a more formal Expressionist style during the Second World War, before veering towards a form of metaphysical painting. Mafai showed still lifes, nudes, city views and landscapes in many exhibitions in Italy.

Malewsky frequented the Grande Chaumiere and Julian academies in Paris during the 1920s. He then enlisted in the French Army in 1939 and reached England less than a year later after his rescue from Dunkirk. Malewsky started to exhibit his works from 1955 in Paris and showed them in New York in 1961 but soon gave up painting. He first produced academic paintings and then veered towards abstraction for a while before working as a post-Impressionist artist. Malewsky notably painted landscapes in France, Spain, North Africa, Greece and Palestine.
