Until 1974, Caro used to paint his steel works and eventually produced Minimalist pieces with more volumes. He then no longer painted his works preferring instead to obtain better effects with their patinas or rusty appearances. During the 1980s, he worked under the influence of Catalan artists such as Gaudi, Gonzales, Picasso or Miro and carved sensual abstract forms. Caro has been considered as the leader of the new sculpture school in England.
