Caro, Anthony Birth - Death : 1924- Nationality : British
Caro initially studied engineering before frequenting the Royal Academy of Art in London. He then taught sculpture at the St Martin School of Art between 1953 and 1979. Working as an abstract artist, he became Henry Moore's assistant between 1951 and 1953 and traveled to the U.S, where he discovered David Smith's works. Caro took part in many exhibitions from 1956, in London, Milan, New York and Paris. At the start, he worked under the influence of Rodin and then under that of Moore. Following his trip to the U.S, he decided to use steel as a medium rather than bronze or terracotta and then produced pieces under the influence of David Smith. Until 1974, Caro used to paint his steel works and eventually produced Minimalist pieces with more volumes. He then no longer painted his works preferring instead to obtain better effects with their patinas or rusty appearances. During the 1980s, he worked under the influence of Catalan artists such as Gaudi, Gonzales, Picasso or Miro and carved sensual abstract forms. Caro has been considered as the leader of the new sculpture school in England.
