Naton immigrated to Palestine in 1935. He earned a living as a factory worker and a lithographer whilst associating with Menachem Shemi and Zvi Meyrovitz. A Dizengoff Prize winner in 1942, he worked simultaneously in abstract and figurative modes. Naton's work, prior to his joining the New Horizons group, painted figurative representations in a low-keyed style and a dark range of colours. In the late 1940s several of the artists affiliated with New Horizons, among them Naton, Marcel Janco, and Aharon Kahana, evolved a geometric alternative to the lyrical-abstract mode of other members of the group. Naton's paintings then displayed a stylised geometric-linear conception, halfway between figuration and abstraction. He painted schematic figures delineated by distinct but sketchy contours forming simple, pyramidal compositions in a colour scale reduced to grey and muddy blue. The figurative element gradually disappeared from his paintings and from the 1950s on, Naton's work was executed solely by means of his characteristic, almost graphic line, forming abstract compositions of juxtaposed geometric planes.
