From 1903 to 1914, he lived in Paris, where he specialised in scenes representing Parisian life. In 1921, he traveled to Java and brought back from his trip some of his finest paintings.
Israels, Jozef Birth - Death : 1824-1911 Nationality : Dutch
Born in Groningen into a devout family, Israels became a leading exponent of The Hague School after studying painting at 17 at the Academy in Amsterdam. He came to Paris in 1843 and spent five years there. French Realism soon revealed itself as the true source of his art when he settled for a while in Zandvoort, where he shared the life of fisher folks. Israels was deeply moved by the simple living conditions of these people and the spirit that he had been able to detect in the works of Courbet and of Millet became part of his life and art too. Influenced also by Rembrandt, he learned how to express all his feelings through light and identified himself entirely with his subject. Already notorious in Holland in the 1850s, he abandoned the Romantic idiom of his early years for a more contemporary realism. Israels was regarded as the principal Dutch painter of his day by the 1870s. He was also concerned with the life of his own people and his paintings on Jewish themes were the most important documents of Jewish art of his age. Israels, who notably painted several Jewish weddings, exerted a deep influence over several painters, including Van Gogh.
