Eagle, Arnold Birth - Death : 1914-1993 Nationality : Hungarian then American
Photographer. Born in Hungary, Eagle settled in America in 1929 with his family. After working as a photo-retoucher, he bought his first camera in 1932 and became active in the Photo League. In 1934 he began photographing Orthodox Jews in Synagogues and old folks' homes. Eagle's prints were notably shown at the Vision Gallery in Jerusalem in 1998.
Edel, Peter Birth - Death : 1921- Nationality : German
Painter. Edel's father was a Jewish businessman in Berlin while his mother was a Christian. He began to study art with the help of his grandfather Edmund Edel who introduced him in February 1934 to Max Liebermann, whose portrait he drew more than once. Edel, who was bar mitzvahed in the Fasanen Street synagogue in Berlin later destroyed in the Crystal Night pogrom of November 1938, joined the German resistance movement in the late 1930s and was arrested by the Gestapo. He was subsequently deported to Grossbeeren, Auschwitz, Sachsenhausen, Mathausen and Ebensee and produced many drawings of inmates in these camps. His Auschwitz drawings from Block 8 still survive and are displayed in the Auschwitz Museum. Edel also worked in Sachsenhausen in a unit specialising in bank notes forgeries as part of a Nazi plan to undermine the American and British economies. Freed from Ebensee in April 1945 he worked in Austria as a painter, illustrator and journalist and later returned to Berlin.

Edwin, Salomon or Salomon Edwin Birth - Death : 1935- Nationality : Rumanian then Israeli
Edwin studied art in Cluj until 1957. He was selected for the decoration of the Auschwitz Memorial in Jerusalem the same year. He then settled in Israel in 1961 and took part in many exhibitions in that country and in Rumania, The U.S, the Soviet Union, Canada and the Philippines as well. He was awarded the Max Nordau Prize by the Museum of Tel Aviv in 1983 after an exhibition on the theme of the Bible. Edwin first worked as an abstract painter and then turned to figurative painting choosing symbolic themes showing the world's disorders and menaces on human life.

Eichinger painted several portraits of rabbis during his career.
Eideliman, Albert Birth - Death : 1915- Nationality : Rumanian
Painter. Eideliman worked as a delivery boy during his youth before going to France in 1929. He enlisted in the French Army at the outbreak of World War Two but was taken prisoner by the Germans. Freed in 1945, he worked in the building sector and decided to enter university at 48 to study modern history obtaining a master degree at 55. He started to work at 65 as a naive painter producing Judaic scenes notably as well as collages.
Eilat, Avraham Birth - Death : 1939- Nationality : Israeli
Painter, photographer, sculptor and printmaker. Eilat studied at the High School for Art in Tel Aviv between 1962 and 1965 and pursued his studies at the “Atelier 17” under William Hayter in Paris between 1966 and 1967 and at the St Martin's School of Art in London in 1970. In 1986, he was one of the founders of the First Israeli Photography Biennale. He became the curator of photography at the Museum of Modern in Haifa in 1989. His sculpture “To the Artists of the 21st Century” stands opposite the Casino in Melbourne, Australia.

Eisenberg, Jacob Birth - Death : 1897-1966 Nationality : Russian then Israeli
Eisenberg immigrated in 1913 to Palestine and studied at the Bezalel Academy under A. Pann, Schatz and Raban. In 1919, he frequented the School for Arts and Crafts in Vienna and specialised in ceramics. He then taught at the Bezalel Academy in 1927-28 and produced stained glass works for the Great Synagogue in Tel Aviv as well as for other Israeli buildings. He notably decorated houses with ceramic tiles. This artist should not be confused with Yaacov Eisenscher.
Eisenscher, Eisenberg or Eizensher Yaacov Birth - Death : 1896-1980 Nationality : Rumanian then Israeli
Eisenscher completed his studies at the Academy in Vienna and then worked during five years in Paris before settling in Palestine in 1935. Active as a post-Cubist painter in Israel he also taught painting between 1952 and 1967 at the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem.
Eisenschitz, Willy Birth - Death : 1889-1974 Nationality : Austrian then French
Eisenschitz was encouraged by his father to study painting in Vienna. He then came to Paris in 1911 and frequented the Academie of La Grande Chaumiere. He then married a young artist named Claire Bertrand and spent three years in Vienna until 1917 before moving to Zurich. Back in Paris in 1920, he went on to work in southern France and suffered serious bouts of arthritis, which deprived him from the use of his right arm from 1931. While he lived in hiding during World War Two his son David, who had joined a resistance unit, was arrested and deported in 1944. Eisenschitz painted some Jewish scenes during his career.

Painter. Eisenstein studied between 1967 and 1971 at the Bezalel Academy, which he headed in 1988. He took part in many exhibitions in Israel and exhibited in Paris in 1991.
