Though his works were praised by Marcel Duchamp he decided to interrupt his career in 1920. At the start Eilshemius painted scenes in a style reminiscent of that of Winslow Homer before producing strong expressionistic visionary works under the influence of Ryder. One of his exemplary paintings titled The Flying Dutchman\" showed a ship facing menacing waves in a terrible storm shadowed by her replica.
