Around Jewish Art

The seemingly effortless process by which a suitable title is selected for an encyclopedia such as this became exponentially more complex and difficult as I explored the available options and heard the mounting arguments from all sides. Finding the right mix of words was crucial. After pondering the subject for several months in an effort to arrive at the best possible title, I finally opted for "Around Jewish Art."

Artists of Jewish Extraction Who Did Not Paint Judaic Scenes

List of artists of Jewish extraction who painted Jewish scenes or whose works came to reflect their attachment to their roots.

There were also some non-Jewish artists who painted Judaic and Jewish scenes or went to work in Palestine and those who exhibited in Jewish institutions and museums as well as others who have not been identified as being Jewish for sure.

Sculptors and medallists
Probably because of a reference in the Bible to Abraham destroying statues of pagan gods, Jewish artists refrained from producing sculptures representing humans until at least the 19th Century. It was only after 1880, when many Jews benefited from the emancipation process in Central and Eastern Europe that they felt inclined to turn to this form of art.
Many Jewish artists worked as sculptors during the 19th and 20th Century, some of them became quite famous like Chana Orlov, Jacques Lipchitz, Elie Nadelman or Jacob Epstein among others.

Younger brother of Maurice and Nandor, Elemer worked as an Expressionist painter and exhibited his works in France from 1933. According to certain sources, he had Gypsy roots but to others, was of Jewish extraction.
Vagh-Weinmann, Mihaly Maurice
Birth - Death : 1899-1986
Nationality : Hungarian then French
Maurice Vagh-Weinmann worked as a portrait and landscape painter. He also produced some paintings depicting Jewish scenes. According to certain sources, he had Gypsy roots but to others, was of Jewish extraction.
Vagh-Weinmann, Nandor
Birth - Death : 1879-1978
Nationality : Hungarian then French
Nandor Vagh-Weinmann first painted Hungarian folk scenes as well as portraits and still lifes. He settled in Southwest France in 1931 and founded an art school in the French Basque town of Urrugne. This artist was notably inspired by the Bible in many of his works produced between 1949 and 1951. According to certain sources, Vagh-Weinmann had Gypsy roots but to others he was of Jewish extraction.

This painter of portraits and still lives settled in Cleveland, U.S.A, some years after studying in Vienna and in Munich.

Nationality : Peruvian
Esther Vainstein worked as a conceptual artist. She created installations and produced photographs.
Vaisman, Alexander
Birth - Death : 1967-
Nationality : Ukrainian then Israeli
Vaisman was born in Czernowith, Ukraine, once an important Jewish centre in Eastern Europe. After working as a book illustrator, he settled in Israel and has since then been taking part in many exhibitions there and in the U.S. His works reflect the eternal themes of Jewish family, faith and ritual.
Vaisman, Meyer
Birth - Death : 1960-
Nationality : Venezuelan
Painter. Born in Caracas, into a Jewish family originating from Eastern Europe that settled in Israel in 1945, he started his studies to become an engineer in Miami but eventually decided to attend the Parsons School of Design in New York in 1980. He opened a gallery there in 1984 and showed his works in many exhibitions, at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York, the Serpentine Gallery in London and Galerie Templon in Paris. Vaisman has been producing some quite amusing works mixing many cultures.

Julia Vajda, married to Lajos Vajda, worked as a Surrealist painter and belonged to the Szentendre Hungarian group.
Valckx, Petrus
Birth - Death : 1920-
Nationality : Belgian
Valckx was a painter of landscapes and still lifes and produced drawings in a hyperrealist style. One of his works is on display at the Negev Museum in Dimona.
Valdberg, Haim
Birth - Death : 20th Century
Nationality : Israeli?
Sculptor. Valdberg notably produced copper and brass relief pieces.
Valdes, Leal Juan de
Birth - Death : 1622-1690
Nationality : Spanish
Valdes-Leal painted a few biblical scenes during his career.
Valdstyn-Karlinsky, Jiri
Birth - Death : 1894-1971
Nationality : Czech
Valdstyn-Karlinsky was deported in 1941 to Therensienstadt, where he produced some ghetto scenes.
Valenti, Italo
Birth - Death : 1912-1995
Nationality : Italian
Abstract painter. Valenti studied at the Academy in Venice and at the Brera Academy in Milan. A co-founder of the “Corrente” group, he exhibited his works from 1932 in Italy. He first produced lyrical paintings and turned to abstraction after the Second World War. One of his works is on permanent display at the Tel Aviv Museum.

Nationality : French
Valentin painted some biblical scenes during his career.
