Around Jewish Art

The seemingly effortless process by which a suitable title is selected for an encyclopedia such as this became exponentially more complex and difficult as I explored the available options and heard the mounting arguments from all sides. Finding the right mix of words was crucial. After pondering the subject for several months in an effort to arrive at the best possible title, I finally opted for "Around Jewish Art."

List of artists of Jewish extraction who painted Jewish scenes or whose works came to reflect their attachment to their roots.


PART III
There were also some non-Jewish artists who painted Judaic and Jewish scenes or went to work in Palestine and those who exhibited in Jewish institutions and museums as well as others who have not been identified as being Jewish for sure.

Sculptors and medallists
Probably because of a reference in the Bible to Abraham destroying statues of pagan gods, Jewish artists refrained from producing sculptures representing humans until at least the 19th Century. It was only after 1880, when many Jews benefited from the emancipation process in Central and Eastern Europe that they felt inclined to turn to this form of art.
Many Jewish artists worked as sculptors during the 19th and 20th Century, some of them became quite famous like Chana Orlov, Jacques Lipchitz, Elie Nadelman or Jacob Epstein among others.

Tabar, Francois Germain

Nationality : French
Tabar painted some biblical scenes during his career.
Tabenkin, Ilya
Birth - Death : 1914-1988
Nationality : Byelorussian
Tabenkin was born into a deeply religious family and often turned to his own traditions in his works. His paintings have been described as a narrow sphere, a magic circle, where figures are signs and drapery holds a sacred meaning, overall resembling a prayer. Painting tragedy, his main aim seemed in fact to investigate the roots of Good and Evil. Tabenkin's works may be found in many private collections in Russia, the U.S, Britain, Italy, Germany and Finland.

Taboh, Samis
Birth - Death : 1952-
Nationality : Greek
A painter in watercolors, tempera and acrylic since 1977, Taboh has exhibited his abstract works from 1984 in Strasbourg, Paris, Athens, Brussels and Piraeus. This artist, whose family was almost entirely exterminated by the Nazis during the Second World War, notably took part in an exhibition titled “The memory of Auschwitz in Contemporary Art” held in Brussels in 1996.
Tadmor, Zwi
Birth - Death : 1923-
Nationality : Polish then Israeli
Painter. Tadmor came to Palestine in 1936 and worked as a painter in Tel Aviv, where he taught at the Avni Institute. He had several one-man shows in Israel and took part in many group exhibitions, notably at the Magnes Museum in California.

Birth - Death : 1788-1868
Nationality : Italian
Tadolini produced a giant statue of King David.
Taib, Salomon
Birth - Death : 1877-?
Nationality : French
Born in Algeria, Taib studied painting in Paris with Leon Bonnat. He exhibited his works at the Salon des Artistes Francais from 1906.

Painter.
Tajar or Tagger, Ziona Sionah
Birth - Death : 1900-1988
Nationality : Israeli
Tajar became one of Israel's finest artists after studying painting at the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem and in Paris during the 1920s. She painted many views of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv as well as the village of Ein Karem.

Talmor, Raya
Birth - Death : 1938-
Nationality : Israeli
Talmor studied painting in Israel between 1959 and 1961 and exhibited her works there and abroad. One of her paintings was chosen for the first day cover and limited edition art print to accompany the United Nations stamp issue of March 13, 1987 titled “Shelter for the homeless”¯.

Tamari, Aaron

Nationality : Israeli?
Tamari depicted a woman fighter of the Hagana resistance movement in an abstract painting dated 1946. He might be confused with S. Tamari, a Russian artist who worked in France from 1946.
Tamari, S.
Birth - Death : 20th Century
Nationality : Russian
Tamari stayed briefly in Palestine before settling in France in 1946. He exhibited his works representing animals in Paris and the U.S between 1946 and 1970. This artist also produced assemblages with various objects cast in bronze.
