Around Jewish Art

The seemingly effortless process by which a suitable title is selected for an encyclopedia such as this became exponentially more complex and difficult as I explored the available options and heard the mounting arguments from all sides. Finding the right mix of words was crucial. After pondering the subject for several months in an effort to arrive at the best possible title, I finally opted for "Around Jewish Art."

List of artists of Jewish extraction who painted Jewish scenes or whose works came to reflect their attachment to their roots.


PART III
There were also some non-Jewish artists who painted Judaic and Jewish scenes or went to work in Palestine and those who exhibited in Jewish institutions and museums as well as others who have not been identified as being Jewish for sure.

Sculptors and medallists
Probably because of a reference in the Bible to Abraham destroying statues of pagan gods, Jewish artists refrained from producing sculptures representing humans until at least the 19th Century. It was only after 1880, when many Jews benefited from the emancipation process in Central and Eastern Europe that they felt inclined to turn to this form of art.
Many Jewish artists worked as sculptors during the 19th and 20th Century, some of them became quite famous like Chana Orlov, Jacques Lipchitz, Elie Nadelman or Jacob Epstein among others.

Na'aman, Michal
Birth - Death : 1951-
Nationality : Israeli
Painter. Na'aman studied art in Tel Aviv and in New York. She also taught at the Art Teachers' Training College in Ramat Hasharon and represented Israel at the Venice Biennale with Tamar Getter.
Naccache, Edgard
Birth - Death : 1917-
Nationality : Tunisian
Naccache started painting in 1931 and took part in several exhibitions from 1938. Co-founder of the School of Tunis he settled in France in 1962. Working as a figurative painter until the early 1950s, he evolved towards abstraction but veered back to figuration after the emergence of Pop Art. He offered a work for an auction sale held on November 28th 2002 in Paris in favor of the Appel Unifie Juif de France organization.
Nachsholi, Barak
Birth - Death : 20th Century
Nationality : German then Israeli
Nachshol iimmigrated to Palestine in 1940 and lived in the kibbutz of Ein Hamifratz until 1953. Nachsholi studied painting and sculpture at the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem and took part in many exhibitions in Israel showing abstract works.
Nachshon, Baruch
Birth - Death : 1939-
Nationality : Israeli
Nachshon has been working as a Hassidic artist in Hebron. This rabbi started to work as a shepherd and discovered nature as a result before studying painting in New York in 1963.
Nachson-Goldenberg, Yifat
Birth - Death : Active from the last quarter of the 20th Century
Nationality : Israeli
Illustrator in Israel.
Nacht, Samborski Artur Stefan
Birth - Death : 1898-1974
Nationality : Polish
Nacht, called Samborski, frequented the Academy in Cracow between 1918 and 1921. He then studied in Berlin until 1923 and worked in Paris from 1924 to 1939. He belonged to the Comite de Paris\" group with which he exhibited in the French capital, Geneva and Poland. Nacht had a one-man show in Paris in 1930 as well as in Argentina in 1960. He taught at the Superior School of Plastic Arts in Sopot in 1946 and later at the Academy in Warsaw. Influenced by the post-Cubist movement active in Paris during the 1930s, he showed his works at the Venice Biennial in 1958. "

Nadel, Norbert
Birth - Death : Active during the first half of the 20th Century
Nationality : Polish
Painter. Nobert Nadel belonged to the “Zwornik” group in Cracow between 1929 and 1939.
Nadel, Zygmunt
Birth - Death : 1854-1926
Nationality : Polish
Zygmunt Nadel painted Judaic portraits and scenes in Poland after studying in Munich.
Nadelman, Elie
Birth - Death : 1882-1946
Nationality : Polish then American
Nadelman studied art in Cracow and Warsaw before staying in Munich during six months. He then came to Paris in 1903 and befriended Picasso, Brancusi, Modigliani, Apollinaire and Gertrude Stein. After settling in the U.S during the First World War, he married Viola Flannery in 1920 and thanks to her wealth he nurtured a passion for collecting. First influenced by Rodin and then by ancient Greek sculpture, Nadelman went on to simplify and reorganise forms rendered in an abstract manner from 1909. He notably exhibited his works in Paris, London and New York. Picasso and Matisse hailed Nadelman as one of the major modern artists.

Nationality : Polish
Nadelmanowna depicted a Jewish wedding in one of her engravings.
Nagele, Rheinhold
Birth - Death : 1884-1972
Nationality : German
Nagele first studied to become a decorative painter between 1899 and 1904 and frequented the School of Decorative Arts in Stuttgart until 1905. He then produced religious works and exhibited at the Bruno Cassirer Gallery in 1907 in Berlin. Following a stay in Munich, he visited Paris in 1914 and decorated a church in Breslau before serving in the German Army. Back in Stuttgart in 1919, Nagele became a cofounder of the Secession group there in 1923. Dismissed from the Reichskammer der bildenden Kunste\" in 1937 as a result of Nazi racial laws, he however managed to seek refuge in England in 1939 and visited the U.S the following year. Nagele settled in The Netherlands in 1952 and returned to Germany in 1963. "

Nagy produced paintings and drawings and exhibited his works in the U.S and abroad, notably in 1987 at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.

Nahon Estelle
Birth - Death : 1914-
Nationality : French
Born in Algeria, Estelle Nahon studied art in Oran and worked as a painter in France.
Nahon, Brigitte
Birth - Death : 1960-
Nationality : French
Nahon studied sculpture in Aix-en-Provence, southern France. She exhibited her works in Tel Aviv in 1988. Her sculptures, made with various materials, are purposely fragile.

Nahon, Myriam
Birth - Death : Active from the last decade of the 20th Century
Nationality : French
Nahon studied art in Paris and took part in several group exhibitions from the early 1990s. She also exhibited gesticulatory works at the Algerian Cultural Centre in 1994 in Paris.
