Around Jewish Art

The seemingly effortless process by which a suitable title is selected for an encyclopedia such as this became exponentially more complex and difficult as I explored the available options and heard the mounting arguments from all sides. Finding the right mix of words was crucial. After pondering the subject for several months in an effort to arrive at the best possible title, I finally opted for "Around Jewish Art."

PART III
There were also some non-Jewish artists who painted Judaic and Jewish scenes or went to work in Palestine and those who exhibited in Jewish institutions and museums as well as others who have not been identified as being Jewish for sure.

Sculptors and medallists
Probably because of a reference in the Bible to Abraham destroying statues of pagan gods, Jewish artists refrained from producing sculptures representing humans until at least the 19th Century. It was only after 1880, when many Jews benefited from the emancipation process in Central and Eastern Europe that they felt inclined to turn to this form of art.
Many Jewish artists worked as sculptors during the 19th and 20th Century, some of them became quite famous like Chana Orlov, Jacques Lipchitz, Elie Nadelman or Jacob Epstein among others.

Mabull

Nationality : German?
Using the name of Mabull, this unknown woman artist produced works depicting life in the Gurs women's camp in 1940. It is believed that Mabull was an alias used by Lou Albert-Lasard, a German Jewish artist.

Nationality : Italian
Maccio painted some biblical scenes during his career.
Macco, Georg
Birth - Death : 1863-1933
Nationality : German
Macco painted views of Jerusalem.
Mach, Yona
Birth - Death : 1915-
Nationality : German then Israeli
Painter. Yona Mach settled in Palestine and studied painting under J. Steinhardt.

Nationality : Polish
Mackowicz produced some paintings depicting Jewish scenes in Poland.

Madeysk produced some sculptures representing Polish Jews.

Mafai, Mario
Birth - Death : 1902-1965
Nationality : Italian
Mafai, who married the Jewish artist Antonietta Raphael in Rome, studied painting in that city and visited Paris, where he discovered the works of Modigliani, Chagall, Soutine, Kisling and Pascin. Inspired by the Surrealist works of Scipione, he became one of the main representatives of what was called the “Roman” School founded in 1928 in reaction against the Novecento movement. He painted somewhat Surrealist works until 1940 and then adopted a more formal Expressionist style during the Second World War, before veering towards a form of metaphysical painting. Mafai showed still lifes, nudes, city views and landscapes in many exhibitions in Italy.
Mafai, Raphael Antonietta
Birth - Death : 1895-1975
Nationality : Lithuanian
Daughter of a rabbi, Antonietta Raphael was born in Kowno and studied music and sculpture in London from 1905. She went in 1924 to Paris, where she befriended Soutine, Chagall, Pascin and Kisling and pursued her studies in Rome a year later. She then married the painter Mario Mafai and founded with him the Roman School in Via Cavour. Much influenced by her Jewish roots, she painted views, still lifes and figures under the influence of Modigliani, Chagall and Soutine.
