Around Jewish Art

The seemingly effortless process by which a suitable title is selected for an encyclopedia such as this became exponentially more complex and difficult as I explored the available options and heard the mounting arguments from all sides. Finding the right mix of words was crucial. After pondering the subject for several months in an effort to arrive at the best possible title, I finally opted for "Around Jewish Art."

List of artists of Jewish extraction who painted Jewish scenes or whose works came to reflect their attachment to their roots.


PART III
There were also some non-Jewish artists who painted Judaic and Jewish scenes or went to work in Palestine and those who exhibited in Jewish institutions and museums as well as others who have not been identified as being Jewish for sure.

Sculptors and medallists
Probably because of a reference in the Bible to Abraham destroying statues of pagan gods, Jewish artists refrained from producing sculptures representing humans until at least the 19th Century. It was only after 1880, when many Jews benefited from the emancipation process in Central and Eastern Europe that they felt inclined to turn to this form of art.
Many Jewish artists worked as sculptors during the 19th and 20th Century, some of them became quite famous like Chana Orlov, Jacques Lipchitz, Elie Nadelman or Jacob Epstein among others.

Jacobs worked as an art photographer. He settled in Paris in 1972 and exhibited his photos there several times.

Jacob Jacobson notably depicted a Jewish cemetery in one of his paintings.

Nationality : Dutch
Jacobsz painted some biblical scenes during his career.
Jacoby (Yankilevsky), Eli Ilya

Nationality : Russian
Jacoby immigrated to Palestine in 1910 and later became a graphic artist in the U.S. He was Vladimir Yankilevsky's uncle.

Jacquemin Raphael
Birth - Death : 1821-1881
Nationality : French
Painter and engraver. Grandson of Rabbi Abraham Cologna Mantoa, grand Rabbi of Paris and of Trieste under Napoleon 1st, Jacquemin studied drawing and painting in Paris and then frequented the Milan and Florence Academies. Back in Paris he made himself known with his “General iconography of costumes between the fourth and nineteenth Century” published in 1867. He painted several Old Testament scenes during his career.

Nationality : Czech
Painter of historical scenes, portraits, landscapes and genre scenes. Alexander Jakesch studied in Prague and in Munich and taught at the Academy in Prague around 1908. He also worked as a sculptor.

Jakesch, Heinrich
Birth - Death : 1867-1909
Nationality : Czech
Heinrich Jakesch studied under his brother Alexander and at the Academy in Munich. Backin Prague, he exhibited small paintings and pastel works, portraits and city views, from 1892. Heinrich Jackesh then produced etchings. Many of his works are on display at the Museum in Prague.
