Around Jewish Art

The seemingly effortless process by which a suitable title is selected for an encyclopedia such as this became exponentially more complex and difficult as I explored the available options and heard the mounting arguments from all sides. Finding the right mix of words was crucial. After pondering the subject for several months in an effort to arrive at the best possible title, I finally opted for "Around Jewish Art."

Artists of Jewish Extraction Who Did Not Paint Judaic Scenes

List of artists of Jewish extraction who painted Jewish scenes or whose works came to reflect their attachment to their roots.

There were also some non-Jewish artists who painted Judaic and Jewish scenes or went to work in Palestine and those who exhibited in Jewish institutions and museums as well as others who have not been identified as being Jewish for sure.

Sculptors and medallists
Probably because of a reference in the Bible to Abraham destroying statues of pagan gods, Jewish artists refrained from producing sculptures representing humans until at least the 19th Century. It was only after 1880, when many Jews benefited from the emancipation process in Central and Eastern Europe that they felt inclined to turn to this form of art.
Many Jewish artists worked as sculptors during the 19th and 20th Century, some of them became quite famous like Chana Orlov, Jacques Lipchitz, Elie Nadelman or Jacob Epstein among others.

Nationality : American
Eagle worked as a photographer.
Eagle, Arnold
Birth - Death : 1914-1993
Nationality : Hungarian then American
Photographer. Born in Hungary, Eagle settled in America in 1929 with his family. After working as a photo-retoucher, he bought his first camera in 1932 and became active in the Photo League. In 1934 he began photographing Orthodox Jews in Synagogues and old folks' homes. Eagle's prints were notably shown at the Vision Gallery in Jerusalem in 1998.
Eberl, Francois-Maurice Zdenek
Birth - Death : 1887-1963
Nationality : Czech
Eberl studied painting in 1905 in Prague and then visited Stockholm, Munich and Amsterdam. He settled in France in 1912 and started to show his works in several galleries before enlisting in the French Army at the outbreak of the First World War. Back in Paris in 1919, he notably painted still lifes, landscapes, cabaret scenes and portraits and also produced illustrations. Eberl sought refuge in Monaco during the Second World War and played an active role within the French resistance movement.

Nationality : French
Ebstein studied sculpture in Paris and exhibited his works at the Salon des Artistes Francais from 1905. He was awarded the French Legion of Honour in 1930.

Eckersberg painted some biblical scenes during his career.
Eckert, Jacob
Birth - Death : 1847-1882
Nationality : German
Sculptor. Eckert produced some biblical-related pieces during his career.
Edeikin, Ephraim
Birth - Death : 20th Century
Nationality : Latvian
Edeikin exhibited his sculpture works in Paris, notably at the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1929.
Edel, Edmund
Birth - Death : 19th-20th Century
Nationality : German
Edel worked as an illustrator in Berlin. He was the grandfather of Peter Edel.
Edel, Peter

Nationality : German
Painter. Edel's father was a Jewish businessman in Berlin while his mother was a Christian. He began to study art with the help of his grandfather Edmund Edel who introduced him in February 1934 to Max Liebermann, whose portrait he drew more than once. Edel, who was bar mitzvahed in the Fasanen Street synagogue in Berlin later destroyed in the Crystal Night pogrom of November 1938, joined the German resistance movement in the late 1930s and was arrested by the Gestapo. He was subsequently deported to Grossbeeren, Auschwitz, Sachsenhausen, Mathausen and Ebensee and produced many drawings of inmates in these camps. His Auschwitz drawings from Block 8 still survive and are displayed in the Auschwitz Museum. Edel also worked in Sachsenhausen in a unit specialising in bank notes forgeries as part of a Nazi plan to undermine the American and British economies. Freed from Ebensee in April 1945 he worked in Austria as a painter, illustrator and journalist and later returned to Berlin.

Edwin, Salomon or Salomon Edwin
Birth - Death : 1935-
Nationality : Rumanian then Israeli
Edwin studied art in Cluj until 1957. He was selected for the decoration of the Auschwitz Memorial in Jerusalem the same year. He then settled in Israel in 1961 and took part in many exhibitions in that country and in Rumania, The U.S, the Soviet Union, Canada and the Philippines as well. He was awarded the Max Nordau Prize by the Museum of Tel Aviv in 1983 after an exhibition on the theme of the Bible. Edwin first worked as an abstract painter and then turned to figurative painting choosing symbolic themes showing the world's disorders and menaces on human life.

Edzgveradze has been working in Tbilissi after studying art in Georgia. He notably produced a painting titled “Jacob's dream”.
Eeckhout, Gerbrand van den
Birth - Death : 1621-1674
Nationality : Dutch
Van Eeckhout painted some biblical scenes as well as portraits of rabbis in Amsterdam during his career. He was one of Rembrandt's main pupils.
Efrat, Beni
Birth - Death : 1936-
Nationality : Lebanese then Israeli
Painter and sculptor. Efrat settled in Palestine in 1947 and studied art with Streichman at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv. In 1964, he went to work in Europe and lived in London between 1966 and 1976. Efrat has also created geometric sculptures.

Nationality : Lebanese then Israeli
Efrat settled in Palestine in 1947 and studied art under Streichman at the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv. He went in 1964 to work in Europe and lived in London between 1966 and 1976. Efrat has been creating sculptures with geometric forms.
