Sculptors and medallists
Probably because of a reference in the Bible to Abraham destroying statues of pagan gods, Jewish artists refrained from producing sculptures representing humans until at least the 19th Century. It was only after 1880, when many Jews benefited from the emancipation process in Central and Eastern Europe that they felt inclined to turn to this form of art.Many Jewish artists worked as sculptors during the 19th and 20th Century, some of them became quite famous like Chana Orlov, Jacques Lipchitz, Elie Nadelman or Jacob Epstein among others.

Nationality : Polish
Rubinlicht was the brother of Natalia Landau, of Franciszka Fredel
*Antal, Sandor
Birth - Death : 1882-1944
Nationality : Hungarian
Antal worked as a sculptor and medallist. He settled in Stockholm after his studies and then in Nagyvarad. Also a writer, he returned later to Sweden and went to work in Germany, Norway, Denmark and Czechoslovakia. Arrested by the Nazis during World War Two, Antal was murdered in a concentration camp.
*Baranoff-Rossine, Daniel Vladimir
Birth - Death : 1888-1942 or 1944
Nationality : Ukrainian
Baranoff-Rossine, who became a major artist of the Russian avant-garde movement, produced several experimental sculptures, notably in glass and metal or wood assemblages. See also Painting section.
*Blaufuks, Arnold Aron
Birth - Death : 1894-1942
Nationality : Polish
Blaufuks studied sculpture under Glicenstein in Warsaw and also produced mosaic works. The Nazis murdered him during World War Two.
*Brauner, Itzhok, Vincent
Birth - Death : 1887-1944
Nationality : Polish
Brauner produced artistic metalwork pieces during the 1930's and also formed a puppet-theatre called “Chad-Gadjon” for which he carved some thirty marionettes. He disappeared during World War Two.
*Carno, Helene Elena
Birth - Death : ?-1945
Nationality : Polish
Helene Carno exhibited her sculptures at the Salons des Tuileries in 1934 and 1935 and of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1938 in Paris. She disappeared during World War Two.

Nationality : Polish
Sculptor. Chajmowicz died during World War Two.
*Cytrynowicz, Citrin, Jacques or Jakub
Birth - Death : 1893-1942
Nationality : Polish
Cytrynowicz first worked as a miner in Germany before settling in Paris in 1920. He worked with the sculptors Bourdelle and Aronson and exhibited in many Salons but always faced poverty. Arrested by the Nazis in 1941 while trying to flee the occupied zone of France, Cytrynowicz was deported to Auschwitz in July 1942 and murdered there.
*Dem, Erna
Birth - Death : 1889-1942
Nationality : Ukrainian
Dem studied at the Academy in Munich and in Saint Petersburg between 1914 and 1915. She completed her studies in 1920 in Paris and traveled through Europe. She produced busts and also some paintings. Arrested by the Vichy police in 1942, Dem was deported to Auschwitz, where she was murdered.
*Drucker, Leon
Birth - Death : 1887-1944
Nationality : Lithuanian
Drucker came to Paris with his family as a child after the death of his father. He first worked as a carpenter and followed night courses to study drawing. Drucker exhibited his works in several Paris salons and traveled to the U.S, where he lived between 1914 and 1918, and to Cuba, where he produced many monuments. Living as a fugitive and suffering from ill health during the German occupation of France, he died on December 1st 1944.
*Fleischhacker, Leopold
Birth - Death : 1882-1938
Nationality : German
Fleischhacker studied in Dusseldorf and at the Academy in Berlin under Herter and Breuer and in Rome between 1905 and 1906. He then lived and worked in Dusseldorf. Fleischhacker, who notably produced a work titled “Judith”, was arrested by the Nazis and died in a concentration camp in 1938.

Birth - Death : 1878-1943
Nationality : German
Freundlich notably studied sculpture under Arthur Lewin Funcke in 1907 in Berlin. He went on to produce some sculptures during his career See Painters' section
*Goldmann, Gyorgy
Birth - Death : 1904-1945
Nationality : Hungarian
*Granowsky, Samuel
Birth - Death : 1889-1942
Nationality : Ukrainian
This painter also produced sculptures. Samuel Granowsky was murdered in a Nazi extermination camp during World War Two. See Painters' section.
*Hochman, Henryk Herszel
Birth - Death : 1879 or 1881-1943
Nationality : Polish
Hochman studied sculpture under Auguste Rodin in Paris. This artist, who produced some Judaic themes during his career, disappeared during World War Two.
*Kachane, Joachim
Birth - Death : 1890-1943
Nationality : Polish
Sculptor. Kachane disappeared during World War Two.
*Kars, Georges
Birth - Death : 1882-1945
Nationality : Czech
Kars produced sculptures of nudes and busts. See Painters' section.
*Kogan, Moshe
Birth - Death : 1879-1943
Nationality : Ukrainian
Born in Bessarabia, Kogan first studied chemistry until 1903 and then art in Germany and in Paris, where he was much influenced by Rodin and Maillol. He lived in Munich from 1903 to 1910 before working in Paris until 1914. He spent the duration of the First World War in Ascona and returned to the French capital in 1918. Kogan, who produced many torso and nude sculptures, was arrested in February 1943 by the Vichy police and deported to a Nazi extermination camp, where he was murdered.
*Krewer, David-Michel Aaron
Birth - Death : 1904-1942
Nationality : Lithuanian
Krewer frequented a Heder during many years and later studied art in Wilno. He came to Paris in 1924 and worked as a sculptor with Bourdelle. The Bible was his main source of inspiration. During the German occupation of France, he was arrested by a police inspector and handed over to the Nazis. Krewer died in a Nazi extermination camp in 1942.
*Ligeti, Miklos
Birth - Death : 1871-1944
Nationality : Hungarian
Ligeti studied sculpture in Budapest and in Vienna. Working under the influence of Rodin he produced monuments and busts. Ligeti disappeared during World War Two.
